We have analyzed the latest data on African swine fever outbreaks in the European Union published by the Animal Disease Information System (ADIS). According to the ADIS annual report, so far in 2022 a total of 246 outbreaks have been reported in domestic pigs and 4,185 in wild boar in the EU.

Poland is the country with the most outbreaks in wild boar in 2021 with 3,221 reported outbreaks. In domestic swine, a total of 124 outbreaks were reported in 2021. Since the beginning of 2022, 1,266 outbreaks in wild boar and 7 in domestic pigs have been reported.

Hungary first reported to ADIS in 2018 and since 2020, outbreaks in wild boar have been decreasing. In 2020, Hungary reported 4,001 outbreaks, in 2021 it reported 2,584, and so far in 2022, there have been 395 outbreaks reported.

Romania continues to be the country with the most outbreaks reported in domestic pigs. In 2021, it reported 1,676 outbreaks in domestic pigs and 1,059 in wild boar. Since the beginning of 2022, 171 and 321 outbreaks have been reported, respectively, which represents a significant decrease compared to the same period of the previous year.

Germany first reported the occurrence of ASF in wild boar in 2020. That same year a total of 403 outbreaks were reported and 2,525 were reported in 2021. The first four outbreaks in domestic pigs were reported in 2021. In May 2022, a big jump occurred with the confirmation of an outbreak in domestic pigs on a farm located about 500 km from the infected area of the country and approximately 7 km from the French border. In July 2022, another outbreak in domestic pigs about 20 km from the Dutch border was reported.

North Macedonia reported the first outbreak of ASF in early 2022 on a backyard farm, the only one so far. The first outbreaks in wild boar were reported at the end of March.
